The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program is an attention-training program, a structured, systematic educational approach that uses intensive training in mindfulness meditation to teach participants to cultivate nonjudgmental, moment-to-moment awareness. The course is based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program offered at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and described in Zinn’s book, Full Catastrophe Living.

All-day retreat: Sunday, Oct. 9, 9 am-4 pm

About the Instructor
 
 Ellen Kaufman, MD

Ellen Kaufman, MD, is a non-practicing OB/GYN who currently serves as the director of Medical Education at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. She is a graduate of the MBSR Practicum and the Teacher Development Intensive Program at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Kaufman suffers from chronic pain, which was the impetus for her to try the MBSR course at UMass as a participant in 1997. The program changed her life by helping her develop a different relationship to the pain. She continues to benefit from practiciing the MBSR techniques, which she has enjoyed sharing wtih others at Cooley Dickinson since February 2006.

Fees

Class Fees and Payment

Enrollment is limited and requires a phone interview with the instructor. A non-refundable deposit of $40 ensures a place in the class.

The cost of the program is $400, which may be paid in three installments over the first three weeks of the class series. The cost includes a copy of Stahl & Goldstein’s A Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Workbook, CDs of guided meditations from the Valley Stress Reduction teachers, and other instructional materials.

Refund Policy

If an applicant withdraws before the first class, the initial $40 deposit is non-refundable. If a participant withdraws from the program after Class 1, s/he will be refunded 66 percent of the total cost of the program, after Class 2 the participant will be refunded 33 percent of the total cost of the program, and after Class 3 there is no refund.

Course Description

The program consists of eight 2-1/2 hour classes and a full day retreat.

Meditation Instruction: Participants are given instruction in four formal mindfulness meditations:

  1. body scan meditation (a directed tour of attention through the body)
  2. gentle stretching and hatha yoga
  3. walking meditation, and
  4. sitting meditation (mindfulness of breath, bodily sensations, feelings, thoughts, and emotions, and choiceless awareness)

There is also instruction in informal mindfulness meditation (mindfulness in everyday life) which includes awareness of pleasant and unpleasant events and deliberate awareness of routine activities.

Home Practice:
There are daily homework assignments including a minimum of 30 minutes per day of formal practice and 15 minutes of informal practice.

Other class instruction:
The classes include group discussions oriented around home assignments including exploration of obstacles and difficulties and development of self-regulatory skills and capacities. Some class time is devoted to communication skills with in-class practice sessions.

About the Instructor

Jeanie Erlbaum, MS, has been studying yoga and meditation since 1965 and has been teaching since 1972. An experienced registered 500-Hour Yoga Alliance Teacher, she is certified as a teacher of several styles of yoga, meditation, and stress reduction. She was trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School. She has studied Zen for over thirty years, and in 2012 was designated as a Senior Dharma teacher by Boundless Way Zen in Worcester, Ma. She has created several yoga and meditation CDs; and her book Sit with Less Pain: Gentle Yoga for Meditators was published in 2014 by Wisdom Publications.
