Campaign Goal: $5 million

Cancer treatment can be complicated, time-consuming, and overwhelming not just fo the patient but for family and friends who play critical supporting roles in the patient's treatment.

Through its collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Cooley Dickinson is creating the very best cancer center a community hospital can offer.

The Comprehensive Cancer Center is part of a $16 million dollar investment in cancer services at Cooley Dickinson and will bring together patients' physicians and care providers, support services, and treatment areas (including lab work, x-rays, radiation, chemotherapy, and rehabilitation) into a centralized, well-coordinated, welcoming place, all here at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

THE UNIFIED CANCER CENTER WILL
  • Simplify lives by saving time & reducing travel
  • Increase communication between caregivers
  • Improve overall patient safety
  • Relieve patient stress
  • Enhance patient outcomes

Nurse Development Programs - learn more here

Campaign Goal: $1 million

Over the next five years, more than 30 percent of Cooley Dickinson's most experienced nurses will retire. Many of these nurses work in specialty areas or leadership positions. While hospitals across the nation are facing this tremendous loss of knowledge and experience, Cooley Dickinson seeks to address this situation in a way that sets us apart.

To ensure our patients receive the highest quality of care possible, we are creating:

Specialty Area Internships
During year-long internships, mid-career nurses work closely with and learn from veteran nurses. Over the next five years, Cooley Dickinson intends to fund approximately 20 nurse interns in specialty areas such as Perioperative Services, Intensive Care Unit, and the Childbirth Center where high turnover is anticipated due to nurse retirements.

Leadership Development Institute
The new institute will train future nurse leaders at Cooley Dickinson. In the same way that we expect our staff to learn best clinical practices, we will educate nurse leaders in best leadership practices. Studies show that leadership training improves nurse leader retention and positively impacts all nursing staff.

Any hospital that aspires to be a model community hospital must invest in its nurses. They are the frontline caregivers at all hospitals, providing 95 percent of direct inpatient care.

THE NURSE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:

  • Ensures continuity of quality specialty nursing care
  • Improves patient satisfaction
  • Improves patient outcomes
  • Improves nurse retention
  • Trains much-needed nurse leaders
