A Health Snapshot of Hampshire and Franklin Counties
Cooley Dickinson Hospital is proud to present this 2011 Community Health Assessment of Hampshire and Franklin Counties. In this report, you will find demographic information about the people who live here and the health of our local population. You'll also find data about the conditions that affect health and how communities compare to each other and state averages. Resources for further research are also provided.
This health assessment report is made possible by Cooley Dickinson's commitment to community health and was approved by the Healthy Communities Committee, a subcommittee of the Board of Trustees. The purpose of the assessment was three-fold:
- To help fulfill the hospital's mission to provide our patients and communities with the best health care in the most appropriate setting
- To provide health-related information and data as a resource to the community
- To engage the community in the process of collecting and using data
The report was developed and written by the Western Massachusetts Center for Healthy Communities, a program of Cooley Dickinson Hospital. It has had input from sectors across the region, including from public officials, educators, administrators, community organizers, community members, city planners, statisticians, and medical professionals.
During Summer 2010, Cooley Dickinson Hospital recruited a group of young people to go door to door and asked Northampton residents to complete a short survey about their health and their ability to access resources in the community that may support healthy choices.
This report will be one more resource to help inform Cooley Dickinson Hospital on how to best improve the health of the people living in its service area. It is but one step in an on-going process of collecting and disseminating health data so that we can all work together to address the health needs of the people living in Hampshire and Franklin Counties.
