Pneumonia Care
Core PN2: Pneumococcal Vaccination: Percent of eligible pneumonia patients receiving an immunization for pneumococcal pneumonia during their hospital stay. Immunization for pneumococcal pneumonia (pneumonia caused by one type of bacteria) is recommended for certain groups of patients, including those hospitalized with community acquired pneumonia. Many patients can be safely immunized while they are at the hospital.
Core PN3b: Blood culture in ED prior to initial antibiotic: of eligible patients who had blood cultures taken 24 hours before or after arriving at the hospital. Many patients admitted with the diagnosis of community acquired pneumonia receive a laboratory test called "blood cultures" 24 hours before or after arriving at the hospital. Blood cultures can help detect which organism is causing a patient's infection. Receiving blood cultures may not be indicated in some pneumonia patients.
Core PN4: Adult smoking cessation advice/counseling: Percent of eligible pneumonia patients who were advised to quit smoking. Giving advice about quitting smoking is important for community acquired pneumonia patients who are smokers or have stopped smoking within the past year.
Core PN5c: Antibiotic within 6 hours of arrival: Percent of eligible pneumonia patients who received their first dose of antibiotics within 6 hours of arriving at the hospital. Of patients that were admitted with the diagnosis of community acquired pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs caused by an infection), eligible patients received their initial dose of antibiotic medications within 6 hours of the time they arrived at the hospital. Receiving antibiotics as quickly as possible has been shown to result in better outcomes.
Core PN6: Appropriate antibiotic selection: Percent of eligible patients receiving the appropriate antibiotics to treat their pneumonia. This measure reports the percentage of eligible patients who received the appropriate antibiotics for treatment of their community acquired pneumonia. This includes patients who are in the intensive care unit (ICU) as well as patients who are not in the ICU.
Core PN7: Influenza vaccination: Percent of eligible patients receiving an influenza vaccine during their hospital stay. When patients have pneumonia they are more vulnerable to getting other infections, such as influenza (flu). During flu season, October through February, patients with community acquired pneumonia may be given the flu vaccine during their hospital stay.
Overall performance for pneumonia care (composite): Percent of eligible patients who received all the recommended elements of care for pneumonia.
