Surgical Infection Prevention
Core SCIP/SIP-Inf-1a: Antibiotic within 1 hour of incision: Percent of eligible patients who received preventive antibiotics within one hour before the start of surgery. It is recommended that preventive antibiotics be given to patients within one hour before the start of surgery. This is important because having the antibiotics already working in the bloodstream when the surgeon starts the operation helps reduce the chances of getting an infection.
Core SCIP/SIP-Inf-2a: Antibiotic selection: Percent of eligible patients receiving the recommended preventive antibiotics before surgery. There are certain antibiotics recommended to prevent infection following surgery. The types of surgery that are currently measured for appropriate selection of antibiotics are: hip replacement, knee replacement, colon, abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy. This measure reports the percentage of eligible patients who received the antibiotics recommended for their type of surgery.
Core SCIP/SIP-Inf-3a: Antibiotic discontinued within 24 hours: Percent of eligible patients whose preventive antibiotics were stopped within the first 24 hours after surgery was completed. Preventive antibiotics should be stopped within 24 hours after surgery. The types of surgery that are currently measured for preventive antibiotics being stopped within 24 hours after surgery are: hip replacement, knee replacement, colon, abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy.
Overall performance for Surgical Infection Prevention (composite): Percent of eligible patients who received all the recommended elements of care for surgical infection prevention.
