The Nursing Alumni Scholarship was established as a named scholarship fund in 2004 and is awarded each year to a deserving senior attending either Northampton High School or Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School who is pursuing a career in nursing.
On Thursday, May 12, 2011, the Cooley Dickinson Hospital Scholarship Awards Ceremony took place in the Locust Street Conference Room. The celebration recognized the achievements of the award winners and the generosity of the donors who have made the funding possible with the hope of encouraging excellence in healthcare.
During the afternoon ceremony, the following awards were presented to Cooley Dickinson staff.

Moss Memorial Scholarship), Stanley Finn (husband of the late Louise Finn), Ann Barstow standing in for her daughter and award recipient Karen Barstow Horgan (Louise Finn Scholarship).
Created by the late Senator Edward Kennedy for care he received at Cooley Dickinson Hospital following a plane crash in Southampton that claimed the life of his aide Edward Moss, The Edward Moss Memorial Scholarship was presented to Sarah Helene L Vertue, a certified nursing assistant on the W5 behavioral health unit and Emergency Department Technician/Phlebototmist. The award will help La Vertue realize her goal of being the first generation in her family to pursue higher education to become a nurse.
Kathleen Newman, APRN in the Radiation Oncology Department, received the Therese Connor Nursing Education Endowed Fund. The fund was established by friends and family in memory of the late Therese Connor, a CDH School of Nursing alumna and long-time nurse. Kathy is delighted to use this year’s award to sit for the certification exam towards being an Oncology Certified Nurse, having already completed the course work in preparation for the exam.
The Louise Finn Nursing Scholarship is given in tribute of Louise, a nurse who worked in the Childbirth Center for over 50 years. The award is given to a child of a current CDH employee who is pursuing a nursing degree. Again this year, Louise’s husband Stanley was delighted to acknowledge recipient Karen Barstow Horgan, daughter of Ann Barstow, RN. Said Stanley, “Karen’s compassion and great desire to care for others makes her a perfect choice to receive this help that will support her nursing studies at Holyoke Community College.”
During a separate ceremony July 7, the CDH School of Nursing Alumni Association Scholarship was awarded to Abigayle Kubacki, a Smith Vocational graduate. Abigayle is planning to become a nurse after her positive experience in the co-operative preceptorship at Smith Vocational which offered her the opportunity to work as a nursing assistant at CDH. She has been accepted at the nursing program at the Elms.
