My Expertise
In my work, I draw on narrative psychiatry, focusing on helping people identify and cultivate their strengths and values as resources for recovery from all kinds of mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, OCD, anorexia, bulimia, and bipolar disorder. I work collaboratively with those who consult with me in considering treatments, which may include medications.

Biography
A board certified psychiatrist, Dr. Hamkins has more than 20 years’ experience in college mental health, community clinic and private practice settings throughout Western Massachusetts. Prior to her position here at UMass-Amherst, as a psychiatrist at Smith College and Westfield State College, her work included assessing and treating student psychiatric needs, providing emergency consultations and interventions, coordinating care with campus and community providers, and training clinical staff.
Dr. Hamkins regularly writes and presents at conferences about her work and is the author of The Art of Narrative Psychiatry, Oxford University Press, 2013.
