Behavioral Health Services
Behavioral Health programs offered through Cooley Dickinson Hospital encompass acute, inpatient care, crisis intervention services, outpatient therapy, consultation to area nursing homes and residential recovery and rehabilitation.
A 24-bed inpatient mental health unit and its staff of registered nurses, certified nursing assistants, psychiatrists, social workers and occupational therapists and counselors meets the needs of both geriatric and adult psychiatric patients ages 18 through 100.
The unit is divided into two sections to meet the unique needs of these distinct populations. A unit-based sensory room - referred to by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health as a leading treatment modality model in Massachusetts and nationally - helps patients learn to improve their coping skills during stressful situations and to regulate their emotions or provide stimulation as appropriate. In concert with the CDH Emergency Department, the behavioral health response team provides psychiatric assessments and triage and is trained to handle mental health/substance abuse emergencies.
Outpatient therapy services treat substance abuse/addictions and a variety of mental health conditions and disorders. Residential programs located in Northampton and Holyoke, Massachusetts assist patients along the recovery spectrum, following detxification, from transitional services to long-term, residential treatment. A geriatric consultation team works with local nursing homes and assisted living facilities to help maintain residents' highest possible level of independent functioning.
