When Theresa and Jeff found out Theresa was pregnant in July 2008, they decided they wanted to take a less medical approach to pregnancy and opted for what they hoped would be a more personal, supportive experience. They sought out midwives and chose to have Theresa's prenatal care provided by Cooley Dickinson's Center for Midwifery Care.
Relocated from Colorado, the Grecos hadn't been in the area long and say they found the midwifery center online while "shopping" for midwifery practices. When they called the center, they said they immediately got a "good vibe" from receptionist Holly Levlyn, who, the Grecos say, was "friendly and professional."
Before committing to the Center for Midwifery Care, the Grecos set up a free meet-and-greet with Midwife Pamela Drexler-Lopez to check out the midwifery center. The Grecos were pleased with the intimate set-up at the center, saying "The fact that it was in an actual house made it homey. It was personal."
Throughout the pregnancy, both Theresa and Jeff found the staff relaxed yet professional saying, "They were comforting. Any concerns were listened to and then we were gently put at ease," Theresa says. "Appointments felt more conversational than clinical, and we took comfort in how much experience the midwives had. Kathy, the nurse we would see each visit, was also warm and easy to talk to."
Jeff was happy to be included in the process, saying that he felt "embraced." He said he was especially pleased that they didn't refer to him "as the 'coach' or anything weird."
After careful consideration, Theresa was induced into labor on April 7 because she was two weeks overdue. She was admitted to Cooley Dickinson's Childbirth Center, and despite using such things as a Jacuzzi tub and an exercise ball, labor was not progressing and the baby's position was not improving; exhausted and discouraged, the couple agreed with the midwife that an epidural was a good option to get things moving in the right direction.
Jeff says that Midwife Judie Brock was "Our rock. We felt safe." Theresa also commented on Judie, saying "Whenever I needed motivation or nurturing, she was there."
Adreana "Addy" Greco was born at 5:30 a.m., delivered by Judie. Throughout the entire process, the Grecos were very pleased with the attentiveness of the Childbirth Center nurses. Addy had some initial difficulty latching on, and the nurses were "wonderful," says Jeff.
The Grecos experience at the Center for Midwifery Care and at Cooley Dickinson's Childbirth Center is not one they will soon forget. One thing that resonated with Theresa was the happiness flowing within the Childbirth Center.
"Every time staff walked in, they were smiling," Theresa said. "You could tell they loved their jobs. They were attentive and kind. They made us feel like our experience was special. We never felt like we were just another couple having a baby."
