Patients Tell Their Stories - Bonnie Page
As a nurse at Marks Meadow Elementary School in Amherst for the past eight years, Bonnie Page has a good sense of the kind of care and attention that people want when they aren’t feeling right. That’s why she so appreciated the care she received from Richard Hernandez, a Cooley Dickinson phlebotomist who drew her blood on many occasions.
"Working in an elementary school, I especially appreciate Richard’s skills and personality," Bonnie says. "Children have everlasting memories of a bad experience and often carry it throughout adulthood. I was one of those kids. From childhood on, I was always a very difficult blood draw, and there were attempts after attempts."
But Richard, who works in Cooley’s Hadley Lab Patient Service Center, did a fantastic job. "There’s more to the job than just sticking someone," Bonnie says. "It takes skill. I think he’s one of the most skilled phlebotomists that I personally have had. I suspect he’s great with children as well."
Bonnie was so pleased with Richard’s work that she took the time to make sure he received a thank you and recognition within the hospital.
"I wanted this young man to know that what he’s doing is a good job," she says. "I think when someone does a good job they really should be recognized," she adds. "I honestly don’t think enough people take the time to do that."
Bonnie, who lives in Hadley and has two grown children with her husband, John Meadows, says Richard runs a "really tight ship.
"You go in there. You sign in and ring the bell. He responds quickly," she says. "He makes you feel at ease. He chats. He’s a very comfortable person to be around."
